Grand Final Weekend Wrap Up

15 SEP | BY BRENTON WESTELL

Athelstone spoils an otherwise perfect day at Thebarton:

In another high standard game of amateur footy, Athelstone managed to reverse the 2nd Semi result to prevail over The Jets in the Div 2 Adelaide Footy League Grand Final. The Jets faithful had already been treated to two fabulous Premierships courtesy of the C Grade and Reserves who started the day to script by putting to bed Modbury & SHOC respectively.

The A Grade started well and were up early in the first quarter but a game ending injury to key forward Simon Munn required a reshuffle, and depleted rotation options in the unseasonal warm weather. Athelstone snagged a couple of quick majors in the ensuing period with scores locked away at 3.2 apiece at the first break.

The Jets maintained the pressure and managed to have a 25 point break halfway through the second before a run of 3 Raggies goals late in the quarter narrowed the margin to 13 at the main break. That was a sign of what was to come as Athelstone put the foot down in the second half. An early goal in the third quarter was the Jets last major for the game as The Raggies seized control despite a dogged Unley Mercedes refusing to capitulate.

The game was put finally to bed when Athelstone scored the first 3 of the last quarter and finished off the game deserved 31 point winners and denying Nick Petch double reason to celebrate his 150th game.

The earlier games were a much different story with Unley Mercedes Reserves side taking the flag in scintillating fashion against arch rival SHOC by 56 points and The C Grade winning their Premiership over Modbury by 31 in the first game.

The Reserves and Thirds can be mightily proud of their seasons; their hard work contributed in no small part to the A Grade making the Grand Final, and our club into Division 1. Their wins quite rightly now become a significant part of club history. Pat Keam’s 100th game couldn’t have come at a better time, celebrating the milestone with a Premiership medallion.

The A Grade finished second in a very high standard competition and in doing so elevate the club to the lofty heights of Division 1 for the 2020 season. Whilst the bitter pill of defeat may be forefront at the moment, there is everything to be proud of and reason to celebrate the 2019 season.

Junior flags prove elusive:

Sadly the Under 16.5’s were unable to go back to back on Friday Night at Campbelltown. Bad luck indeed to Trent, his support crew, and the lads on the result but well done on another outstanding season. For those lads now moving into senior footy.. we look forward to seeing you at pre-season come November. Talk to Trent about senior footy at The Jets.

In Sunday’s game The Under 15’s, after reeling in Goodies score in the last quarter were beaten by the clock, falling a heart-breaking 1 point short when the final siren rang. Congratulations however to all the coaches, helpers, and players on a fabulous year of footy.
